Nutrition? To fight off a virus? Who’d a thunk it?

I know well there are talking heads in our media who understand these concepts, after having read my book The China Study—some even having spoken to me. Yet, not once have I heard them mention the word “nutrition.” Why is this? If we can’t tell people the truth of nutrition in a time of crisis, when so many are suffering from COVID-19, and we must restart our economy to avoid yet further suffering, when will we have the courage to do so? Trillions have been spent on the suppression of this truth. When might we decide that human life is more valuable than the profits of corporations and the power of politicians?

T. Colin Campbell, PhD, The Path to Recovery through Nutrition: Our Most Important Defense Against COVID-19

Despite the blackout from the mainstream media and government at all levels, word is getting out that the best defense against COVID-19 is a robust immune system. That this should be some kind of revelation to people underscores just how successful the pharmaceutical industry and the conventional medical profession have been in convincing people that the solution to all their ills comes from drugs and “medicine.” How many people are literally sitting around waiting for a vaccine that may never come instead of building up the God-given system within their own bodies to fight off illness and disease?

To see whether I was just stuck in my own bubble, I checked out Google Trends. Yes, indeed, the search terms “how to boost immunity” and “immune system” spiked sharply in March 2020. The results have since come down, but they’re still well above where they’ve been for the past five years. Google the search term “covid-19 boost immune system” and you’ll get more than 28 million results. Hooray!

Nutrition Plays a Critical Role in Immune Support

In just one among many from mainstream sources, an April 24 story from CBS affiliate KOIN out of Portland, Oregon, “OSU researcher: Vitamins help immune system fight COVID-19,” reports on the work of Oregon State University researcher Adrian Gombart and fellow researchers in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and The Netherlands. Their peer-reviewed study, Optimal Nutritional Status for a Well-Functioning Immune System Is an Important Factor to Protect against Viral Infections, concludes, “A wealth of mechanistic and clinical data show that vitamins, including vitamins […]; trace elements […]; omega-3 fatty acids […] play important and complementary roles in supporting the immune system. Inadequate intake and status of these nutrients are widespread, leading to a decrease in resistance to infections and as a consequence an increase in disease burden.”

Said Gombart, “The problem is that people simply aren’t eating enough of these nutrients. Vitamin C has roles in several aspects of immunity, including the growth and function of immune cells and antibody production. Vitamin D receptors on immune cells also affect their function. This means that vitamin D profoundly influences your response to infections.”

This Isn’t News

Despite all the new stories popping up about boosting one’s immune system to fight off a virus, it’s hardly news. In fact, it’s not “news” at all. Indeed, the report mentioned above states that “the role nutrition plays in supporting the immune system is well-established.”

One of those who helped to establish such knowledge is T. Colin Campbell, PhD, co-author of the groundbreaking The China Study, considered by many to be the most comprehensive study of nutrition ever conducted. Dr. Campbell, a bio/nutritional researcher with more than six decades of experience in the field of nutritional science, is the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University and founder of the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and the online Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate in partnership with eCornell.

Notably, in 1982, before The China Study, Dr. Campbell co-authored (along with twelve other U.S. National Academy of Science NAS Committee members) a 482-page report on “Diet, Nutrition, and Cancer”, the first institution-based report to suggest that diet and nutrition were directly connected to human cancer. No matter the facts, no matter his reputation, Dr. Campbell, for daring to challenge the conventional wisdom regarding the American diet, was expelled from his professional society, the American Institute of Nutrition, even though its executive council had just nominated him as their choice to be president!

Nutrition: Our Most Important Defense Against COVID-19

Very recently, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Campbell published a two-part article, Our Most Important Defense Against COVID-19. In Part I, Finding Hope Through Scientific Evidence, Dr. Campbell reiterated that he and his China Study colleagues obtained more than three decades of evidence that shows “how viral immunity was enhanced not by drug means but by nutritional means, namely, higher consumption of plant-based foods.” He continued, “a Whole Food Plant Based diet can 1) prevent, perhaps even reverse, the chronic degenerative diseases which make older individuals more susceptible to COVID-19 while 2) simultaneously increasing immunity by inactivating the COVID-19 itself. Consuming this diet does not mean we won’t get infected by the virus, but it should increase our defenses to avoid the worst effects from the infection, and in so doing, help to flatten the curve of hospitalizations.”

In Part II, The Path to Recovery through Nutrition, Dr. Campbell states that “there is substantial evidence that, unlike drugs targeted to specific disease endpoints, nutrition, the kind that benefits a range of chronic degenerative diseases, also should be expected to affect a range of viral diseases as well.” Also in part II, he shares a very interesting correspondence with a physician friend of his.

His friend argued that the hepatitis B virus is a totally different viral entity than COVID-19 (the main focus of The China Study was the hepatitis B virus) “and it’s an unacceptable scientific extrapolation to assume what worked for one virus will work for another. In the same way that we cannot use Tamiflu or other conventional anti-virals against the coronavirus – because the Tamiflu-like drugs were designed to act on influenza viruses (a different viral entity with different surface enzymes than the coronavirus) – what proof do you offer that what may have been effective against hepatitis B virus will help with the coronavirus?”

Campbell responded, “The beginning of my response rests on this important fact: Tamiflu (or any other drug) does not behave like nutrition. A whole food, plant-based diet, rich in phytochemicals and other nutrients, generates a wholistic response by enabling the body to achieve optimal health through complex and synchronous metabolic pathways, that ultimately affect every aspect of its functioning. This is why a plant-based diet addresses a wide range of chronic conditions. Tamiflu, in contrast, is a targeted therapy, designed to deal with a narrow subset of flu viruses, at most. Through the lens of Tamiflu, the differences between viruses become important, because it is a technological solution focused on a specific viral endpoint. In contrast, when we give the body the proper nutrition so that it can optimize its countless functions, this optimization includes the body’s immune system – a system that is highly adaptable.”

Where Have We Heard That Before?
